The Benefits of Traditional Thai Massage
“Practised for over 2500 years, traditional Thai massage is inspired by various ancestral traditions. Zoom in on its history and benefits.”
History of Thai massage
Contrary to popular belief, Thai massage was created in northern India over 2500 years ago by Jivako Kumar Bhaccha, a physician and friend of Buddha. He is said to have created this technique, inspired by yoga, for monks. It then spread to the population under the impulse of the latter. This technique was then taught in Thai Buddhist temples. In Thailand, Jivako Kumar Bhaccha is still considered by many as the “Father of Medicine”. It was not until the 1960s that this massage became known in Europe. It became very popular in the West in the 1980s and 1990s.
How does a traditional Thai massage work?
At the Centre thai zen a Thai massage can last 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours depending on the preference of the person being massaged. Before the treatment, a cotton pyjama is lent to the client, who is then installed on a futon on the floor. Then the masseuse begins a choreography with her thumbs, elbows, knees and feet. She uses her body weight to alternate stretching and pressure (inspired by yoga). It is a real in-depth work. During this treatment, you must expect to be manipulated by the masseuse and to sometimes take surprising positions! No particular flexibility is required during this treatment. The masseuse will pay particular attention to the client’s breathing in order to promote blood and lymphatic circulation.
